About three weeks after my cat had her kittens they began to try out mommy’s cat food. Usually they preferred her milk (no surprising) but it showed how animals by nature move from basic milk to solid food.
This progression is seen in babies as well who though loving mothers milk, will eventually graduate to Gerbers baby food.
The interesting thing is we are surrounded by reminders that children as they grow move on to more solid food. But spiritually we often remain babies.
A great illustration of this is found in “Grasping God’s Word‘ by J. Scott Duvall, and J. Daniel Hays. They explain that when coming to Scripture we can either find steak, or baby food depending on the effort we put into Bible study.
Sadly, though there is an opportunity for Christians to find steak when they come to Scripture, most come away with strained peas.
For some this is because they don’t know how to study the Bible…..
but for most they just aren’t willing to put the work in.
It’s incredibly sad to see Believers go through their entire lives on a diet of spiritual baby food. Mostly because they never really grow past childhood.
May the Lord help us move away from baby food, and begin cutting into the steak of God’s Word
