I often joke about how difficult it is to drive in Barrouallie sometimes since there are so many obstacles to work around.
Every morning and afternoon that includes herds of sheep!
The amazing thing is those sheep are walking by themselves. They leave on their own after being let out of a pen around 9:00, and they will return home around 5:00. Occasionally someone may walk with them to make sure they don’t wander into traffic, but usually it’s just them!
These sheep are amusing, but they also teach a very important lesson….
Even the most stubborn of us can learn!
We all know that sheep are stubborn and foolish animals. They have no problem walking directly into the path of a car to eat the grass on the other side of the road. Scripture clearly describes them as animals that wander into danger without even recognizing it, or choosing to walk into danger because they feel like it.
Yet those same animals walk to the field and back on their own every day!
Of course, this doesn’t happen overnight! But through repetition, discipline and the development of habit that daily walk becomes second nature. It IS possible to train the stubborn animal, but it’s hard work.
Those stubborn sheep remind me of stubborn people who continually choose their own way, and refuse to obey. It’s easy for us to give up on them because training either takes too long, or is very hard.
But they will learn!
The most stubborn heart can be made soft through the power of the Gospel, loving discipline, and daily repetition.
