Missions is Not Having the Answers

I have an incredible amount of respect for early missionaries such as Hudson Taylor, and Adoniram Judson, and David Brainerd. These were men who waked with a radical amount of faith in God.

These early missionaries would literally go to the mission field with their casket on the boat, because they didn’t ever expect to leave!

While I respect those men and women, I also appreciate the comfort, as well as convenience that God supplies missionaries today. It is indeed a blessing to communicate with friends at family at home, have a comfortable place to live, and keep myself in strong health.

But God still calls for us to walk by faith!

Many times, we see walking by faith as what the early missionaries did. This is definitely true! However, today in my humble opinion that isn’t walking by faith.

We gladly take advantage of the comforts God provides (while not worshiping them)

Instead, walking by faith means we step out and act without all of the answers.

There is a very balance between planning, and walking by faith. Missionaries have a reputation for going overboard on the “walking by faith” side. But the truth is, we often focus too much on planning.

Of course planning is not a sin! But part of us wants to have every question answered, and and every problem fixed before attempting something for the Lord. I personally feel this comes from our sin-nature, which desires to make ourselves the one in control instead of God.

So walking by faith today is getting a clear understanding of God’s Will, and then pursuing it.

Allow me to illustrate

The Lord recently placed a burden on my heart to start a summer reading program for children, and computer tutoring program for adults. This computer tutoring program involves teaching adults how to do things with technology (like their smartphone) in a way they can fully understand. Many are used to having their children or grandchildren for technical support 🙂

There were many unanswered questions about these ministries

  1. How many children would be in each group?
  2. What do I use for reading material?
  3. When would these reading sessions be held? Where?
  4. How do I make a difference between computer tutoring, and tech support? (I am not there to fix their broken phone)
  5. And what if too many people come for sessions?

By Gods help I will answer those questions and more as time passes

but that doesn’t keep me from putting flyers on the trees and telephone poles already
