A few weeks ago I was at the church early on a Sunday morning helping a plumber fix a water pipe that had burst. Walking back to the house I took a moment to admire the gorgeous sunrise.
I love the sunrises (and sunsets) in Saint Vincent because they are always spectacular….
and because they encourage us to focus on today
That sounds simple right? But it’s easier said than done! We often focus on struggles or failures of yesterday, and the unknown problems of tomorrow. Living mentally in the past or future is exactly what Satan wants us to do, because it keeps us from doing the work of today.
Living in the past fills us with guilt or shame
Living in the future fills us with anxiety, often thinking of the worst case scenario.
So we must live in today
- by owning the failures of yesterday, receiving forgiveness, and moving forward in the power of God
- by admitting there are many problems we cannot fix, and trusting God to care for them
- And by becoming laser focused on today
The sunrise in Saint Vincent is a beautiful reminder of Gods daily mercies we read about in Lamentations 3:22-23
Lamentations 3:22–23 22 It is of the LORD’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. 23 They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.
Or as the hymn “great is thy faithfulness” says “morning by morning new mercies I see.”
The Mercy of God gives us a fresh start each day. Another opportunity to move on from the failures of the past, trust Him with the problems of tomorrow, and follow Him today.
This Mercy says to us “I know you failed yesterday, and that’s okay, you are forgiven.”
I am thankful that the Gospel restores those who have fallen.
And every day we are given a new reminder of God’s restoring Grace.
