Over the summer in July my brother Michael came to visit me for three weeks. We created a lot of memories during that time, but he also fell in love with my dog Vincy (short for Vincentian).
He would laugh at many things Vincy did…..
But was most amazed him the most was afternoon nap time.
Because the sun rises earlier here, and the temperature is hot, I get up early in the morning. So, after lunch I will usually take a short nap. It didn’t take long for the dog to realize this, and he started joining me for a nap. Then he began to figure out naps came right after lunch.
Now I walk into my bedroom around 12:30 each day to find the dog already there (and occasionally a cat)!
Pictures like this make me laugh because animals can learn
but it also reminds me we need naps.
My post-lunch nap isn’t usually very long, but interestingly it has become a normal part of my routine. In fact if I don’t get that rest, my body might feel off from the rest of the day.
But naps aren’t just part of my habits, but bring wonderful benefits.’
- they help me clear my mind
- gain energy for the hotter part of the day
- relieve weariness (I do get tired in the afternoon since I’m up early)
- and give added focus
Most importantly, those naps refresh my mental, and physical energy
life wears us down in many different ways. So it’s necessary to not only be careful about spending too much energy, but also replenish it. Breaks (like naps, times for reading and relaxation, physical activity such as a walk) allow us to step aside from the work for a short time, and return with renewed energy.
I used to view naps as laziness as laziness but not anymore because they are short breaks that help me become more productive.
So naps are very important.
especially when your dog takes them with you.
