Last Saturday I was driving some Church members back from a funeral when the vans battery light came on. Very carefully I continued driving, trying to conserve power so that we wouldn’t break down before getting home.
Coming down the hill towards my house the van started losing all power….
and I literally coasted into my parking space!
After working a bit on it with friends my worst fears were confirmed, the alternator had gone bad. Trust me when I say that wasn’t how I planned to spend my Saturday, especially when I’d had the van a little over a week (editor’s note: I don’t blame the previous owner since there is no way of knowing when an alternator will go bad).
The rainy season here started recently, so we checked the van in heavy rain. That was symbolic because a bad alternator (that may have to be ordered from overseas) is definitely a storm in life. The clouds overhead and raindrops could have dampened my mood.
But they didn’t……
because I saw sunlight in the storm.
Yes, things were bad, but the Grace of God can be clearly seen in what COULD have happened.
- we could have broken down between town and home
- If this happened we would have to walk, or take a van back (in the rain)
- My van would then be in a dangerous spot since I’d have to leave it on the side of the road. There would be a strong possibility of someone stealing parts
- and It’s possible I’d have to have the van towed back home if a part couldn’t be found.
Wednesday morning, I am going to check a local parts store that should have an alternator that would fit the van. But even if they don’t and I have to order parts from overseas God is still in control of the situation.
I’m so thankful even in life’s darkest moments the sunlight of God’s Grace can be clearly seen.
