In September of 2019 the Lord allowed me to teach the first class for Freshman at the Baptist Bible College of the Caribbean. It was a joy to lead that class on Bible Doctrine, and help the young men learn foundational truths of Scripture.
The first week I gave away my KJV Scofield Study Bible to a student, and my KJV Ryrie a few weeks later.
Giving study Bibles to these young men was a blessing….
but teaching them to interpret it was more important.
Our first class sessions were a bit loud at times as students expressed their opinions about different subjects. This is fine in learning, but this kind of arguing could easily take away from the class itself. So I would bring things back under control by asking, “what does the Bible say?”
Sadly, many Christians use their own opinion or experience as the foundation for beliefs instead of Scripture. They may use one or two verses (often out of context) and then add their ideas.
This is incredibly dangerous because it completely skips observation (“what does it say?”) and moves to interpretation (“what does it mean?”). Jumping to interpretation means our emotions, or thoughts become the foundation instead of Scripture.
This is why Bible Doctrine class is so important….
It challenges the student to study the passage, and let Scripture speak for itself.
Last Fall the Lord allowed one of those original students to graduate with a degree from BBCC. Over the years, I’ve seen him go from someone who would loudly defend his own beliefs into someone who explains his view using an open Bible.
This Monday the process starts again as I teach a brand new group of students Bible Doctrine.
Sadly I have no more study Bibles to give away, but that’s alright
I will teach them how to interpret Scripture
And thats the most important thing anyways.
