Honoring Moms Who are Dads Too

Last Friday was International Womens Day. I spent some time thanking the Lord for Godly women He brought into my life such as my mother. And also for the women go Saint Vincent (and Barrouallie particularly).

There are many reasons why I thank God for the women of Saint Vincent….

But one of the most important is they do things the men should do.

Biblically the role of men within the family is to provide (by working) and protect, the role of women is to nurture and train children. Both of these roles are beautifully ordained by God, and used for His glory.

Sadly there are some places where the men refuse to fulfill their role.

I have a deep love in my heart for the men of Saint Vincent. But I also have a deep burden for them (and sorrow) because so many refuse to lead like God has commanded. Because life is hard here, they eventually give up, and stop trying to provide or protect.

A large number of men are more interested in spending money on alcohol than on their children!!

So because the fathers refuse to lead…..

The mothers step into leadership.

Barrouallie is filled with mothers who are mom, dad, uncle, and grandpa all at the same time! Though they may not lead as well as the father, they become Godly leaders and examples for their children. Finding ways to make money to put food on the table (that they cook) and protect their children and grandchildren from the wickedness of this world.

What makes me sad is mothers (and sometimes grandmothers) aren’t recognized for the incredibly hard work they put in each day. It’s not easy to see the daily work around the house such as washing clothes, cleaning, and cooking since those kinds of things are constantly needed. And of course, leadership of the home isn’t something people notice (unless you aren’t doing it).

So every once in a while, we must stop, and recognize what mothers do.

The time will come when their children and those in the community will recognize their hard work (Proverbs 31:28).

But until then we honor the mothers who willingly become fathers.
