Choose the Hard Road

Choose the Hard Road

As a rule I generally don’t read Andy Stanley’s books, or listen to his preaching, because he has fallen away from true doctrine. However some of his earlier writing is quite good! One of those good books is “The principle of the Path.”

In it he shares a simple, but powerful truth…

Our small decisions lead us towards a larger goal.

I like the analogy of a path that he uses in this book. Each of our smaller choices are like steps down a path of life that leads to a specific destination. So we must be very careful with the small choices that we make.

These paths of life can be defined many different ways. But basically they are:

  1. The Path of Passiveness
  2. The Path of Purpose

The Path of Passiveness is a life of comfort, ease, and pleasure.

The Path of Purpose is a life of self-discipline, suffering, and hard work.

At first it seems choosing between the Paths of Passiveness or Purpose is easy! But that is before we look at their destination.

The Path of Passiveness leads to sorrow, and lack of growth. Most importantly, this life follows the world instead of God.

The Path of Purpose leads to growth! And it follows God instead of the world.

The problem with these paths is we don’t really think about them much. Sleeping in for ten more minutes instead of getting up and doing work doesn’t seem like that big of a deal. But this chooses passiveness instead of purpose. And each small step down that path takes us farther and farther away from Christ.

Far too many Christians (myself included) choose the easy road of passiveness by habit instead of the hard road of purpose. This should scare us! Because this means we can go far down that path of destruction without even knowing it.

I know it’s difficult to choose the hard road friends.

But choose it anyways.

Because ever step down the path of Purpose brings us closer to God.
