Last Monday I walked down to the church to do some ministry, and a few people were relaxing there. This isn’t a problem since the afternoon sun is especially hot, and the area in front of the church offers cool shade.
However the angry man standing there was a problem….
Especially when he started blaspheming God!
I am honestly not sure what had upset him, but he was angry when I walked up. And my appearance gave him an opportunity to vent his frustrations. The man immediately started to blaspheme God, Jesus, and other teachings of Scripture. He also asked lots of questions about the Bible (without waiting for an answer).
Now I’m a very calm person
but I did fight him when that happened!
Oh, don’t worry, I didn’t use my fists! Instead, I used an open Bible, and calm questions. Thankfully he left after realizing I wasn’t going to get angry and start shouting. I’m pretty sure that was his goal in the first place.
That experience was a reminder we as Christians don’t fight over everything, but we do fight over Doctrine.
Sadly, many Believers today are known by their willingness to fight over ANYTHING. It’s true that we are called to fight over the truth, but often they will end up fighting over opinion. Personal convictions, or interpretations of Scripture should be something we stand firm on, and defending them is not an issue. But we aren’t called to find over personal views. We are called to fight over Doctrine.
When we fight over everything fighting becomes part of our identity. We can even take PRIDE in fighting others! But fighting should instead be reserved for when someone is being blasphemous.
I got into a conversation recently online with someone about the commercial from #Hegetsus where Jesus washes feet. In the conversation I explained it like this…..”I won’t fight about many things, but I will fight about Jesus.”
But why fight?
- Because Jesus didn’t come to wash feet
- And He didn’t wash his enemies feet (other than Judas)
- Jesus didn’t allow individuals to stay in sin
- And most importantly, Jesus today is no longer the loving gentle shepherd. He will return as a Righteous judge.
I agree friends that we don’t need to fight about everything.
but when people begin to change how we view Jesus
It’s time to fight
