Simpler is Better

Simpler is Better

All of last week kids in my community have been on Easter break. As usual, things were fun at first, but by Friday they were officially “bored.”

In many places their response to boredom would be watching TV or using a tablet all day. But in SVG most children no longer have tablets (they are broken) so they do the next best thing.

They make kites!!

The kites themselves are very basic. Just sticks, some twine, and a black trash bag. But the fun that they have making them, and flying them gives hours of entertainment.

And yes they really do fly!

Those of you are reading this on my website can see a video below of boys flying their kites past my house (please excuse my barking dog).

watching those boys fly their kites was fun….

But those kites are more than just a fun experience. They are proof that sometimes simpler is better.

Life is hard! As children we always look forward to the days when we can become adults. But of course, adulthood is far more stressful than we think!!

  • This is why we must return a simpler time of life….
  • a time of life that’s unplugged from technology, pressure, and deadlines.
  • A time when we made kites.

No, we cannot just give up on everything! But we CAN leave the constant distraction and experience a simpler time.

  1. by turning off our phone (or better yet, leaving it home).
  2. By getting out into nature
  3. Enjoying some exercise
  4. or work on a simple project

Those simple moments will give us great joy.

Friday afternoon a man was helping the boys make kites. The kids were shocked and amazed at home well he did it. But of course, the man had made countless ones in his childhood!!!!

While making the kite the man had a huge smile on his face. Because he remembered simpler times.

And in that moment….just for a moment

he was a child again.
