I recently started reading “The Emotionally Healthy Leader” (an excellent book). It shared a very simple but incredibly important truth.
Being with Jesus is more important than doing for Jesus
It’s written by a pastor who had a thriving ministry, but his personal walk with the Lord struggled. He found that his whole focus was on “doing for Jesus” (constant activity) and very little focused on “being with Jesus” (time spent with the Lord).
That hit hard for me…..
because I believe many people (particularly those in ministry) fall into that same trap.
We define success as a growing ministry. So, to reach that goal we ignore “being with Jesus” through things like Bible reading, Scripture meditation, memorization, prayer, fasting, and journaling. These activities are slow and meditative while “doing for Jesus” is fast and exciting.
The problem is we cannot pour ourselves into others if our spiritual cup is empty.
My life is going to get busy in about a week, and that’s okay, because God wants me to do things.
But a few quiet weeks are needed before that.
Because I cannot do things for Jesus, if I have not been with Jesus
