Sitting on the kitchen table near my laptop for the last week has been a jug. And this jug had a bunch of flowers in it. The suprising thing is they were dead!
Why would I have dead flowers sitting on my kitchen table?
Because of who gave them to me
A few weeks ago I attended a missions conference at a supporting church. Monday night I shared with their teens, and had a great time! Some young ladies got to know me during that session, and for the rest of the week would greet me whenever they saw me.
Wednesday before speaking in chapel I saw some of them who were students at the churches school. They were picking flowers during PE. To be nice I walked over and told them how pretty those flowers were.
About an hour later after finishing a lesson in chapel I asked if any students had questions. The rule was if you asked a question Monday night, you couldn’t ask a question that day since there were LOTS of questions!
One of the girls from Monday raised her hand to ask a question and I asked, “weren’t you there Monday night?” Shyly she held out to me a bouquet of wildflowers wrapped in a napkin.
She didn’t want to ask me a question….
She wanted to give me flowers (on behalf of the group)!
I immediately apologized for not understanding and commented on how beautiful the flowers were. For the rest of the question and answer time I carried them in my hand, and they ended up on the kitchen table.
Every time I look at them I’m reminded how powerful a simple act of kindness can be.
Through the session Monday night those young girls understood that Mr. John (what they call me in SVG) cared about them, and the young people of Saint Vincent. So when I complimented the flowers, they wanted to do something nice for me.
And that random act of kindness turned my day from a good one to an amazing one.
Yesterday the flowers were put into a box, and will be sent to the shipping agent along with other items in a few weeks.

The flowers will probably be in pretty bad condition when they get to Saint Vincent.
But they will end up on the kitchen table.
